Kindergarten


The Kindergarten classes at Sacred Heart School are academically based with lessons in Religion, Language Arts, Math, Science Social Studies and Health. We strive to develop the whole child with additional classes in Art, Music, Computer Lab, Library and Physical Education. This is a full day program.

KINDERGARTEN CURRICULUM

RELIGION
Series: Faith First

  • Creation - Exploring the world God made and their responsibility to care for it.
  • God – Learn about God’s love through the gifts of creation.
  • Jesus Christ – Learn about Jesus’ birth and life on earth.
  • The Church – Learn about the Church as a family created by God and knowing their own membership in the Church
  • Christian Morality – Know that God created us to know, love and serve him
  • The Sacraments – Introduced to the sacraments through symbols.
  • Salvation History – Know that God has a plan for creation and that all people are called to the justice, love and peace.
  • Christmas and Easter Stories

LANGUAGE ARTS
Series: Reading Street

Reading Skills:

  • Recognize common environmental symbols/signs/words
  • Bring to use left to right, top to bottom directionality to track print
  • Identify book parts (cover, title, picturee, text)
  • Identify letters and their sounds
  • Identify short vowels sounds in words
  • Read simple readiness words


Vocabulary

  • Understand word meanings

SCIENCE
Series: Science

  • Five senses – Identify the functions of the five senses and how we use them.
  • Weather – Recognize types of weather and how they affect us, the water cycle, and dressing appropriately.
  • Animals – Different animal groups, animal movement, habitats, body coverings.
  • Plants – Parts of plants, functions of the parts and how we use plants.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Series: Greet the World

  • Learn about the world around us.
  • Recognize that rules keep us save and help us get along with others
  • Recognize the importance of community helpers
  • Holidays (Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, Dr. Martin Luther King Day)


HEALTH

  • Fire safety – STOP, DROP & ROLL, personal safety, fire prevention
  • Nutrition – Five food groups, difference between healthy and unhealthy foods, importance of eating healthy foods.
  • Dental health – The how and why of taking care of our teeth.

7th Grade Buddies
All kindergarteners are partnered with a 7th grade buddy who welcomes them to our school community, works with them on projects through out the year, and shows them that those 'big kids' aren't so scary after all.

Latchkey Care
The Shamrock Fun Club Latchkey program is available before and after school hours.
