Since 1988 we as a parish have been keeping a “Book of Life.” It’s the book in which we inscribe the names of our loved ones who have gone before us in death. We bring out the book during the month of November, place it in a prominent place next to the Paschal Candle and remember in a special way those who are already enjoying eternity.

This practice is rooted in our belief in the Communion of Saints. Communion is being at one with and saints are those brought through baptism to God. Traditionally, we speak of 3 groups who belong to this Communion, those of us who are now trying to live our baptismal calling here on earth, those who have died but are still in need of purging and purification before union with God, and those already enjoying this eternal union.

November, more than any other month, might be called the Month of the Communion of Saints. We begin the month with the celebration of All Saints Day, immediately followed by the commemoration of All Souls Day on Nov. 2. We sense our oneness with those who have died, as we recall fond memories of them and pray for them that they may enjoy eternal life in the kingdom. The presence of our “Book of Life” during the month of November keeps these thoughts ever fresh in mind.

As in the past we invite you to have the names of your loved ones added to the Book. If you already have a family page and need to add a name, let us know. If you do not have a page and would like to begin one, that can be done as well. In order to keep the script consistent in the Book, we ask that you submit names to the Parish Office and we will add them for you. Mary Beth Oravec is the original calligrapher. Since the origin of the book we have computerized the process. Now , the parish secretary, keeps the book updated on her computer.

You can take a Book of Life- Name Addition Information Sheet from the bookracks (or this web page), add the names which need to be added to your family sheet, or indicate it as a new listing, and drop the sheet in the collection basket or at the parish office. Additions requested during the year will be added prior to displaying in November. Additions requsted during November are added weekly.
